Consistency - Consecuencia

After a long break, including some holidays, a degree, and many more issues amidst, I decided to write on a particular subject - consistency.

I shall say inconsistncy instead. This trait is normally considered a flaw, however, it is extremely necessary while managing or just playing politics. The reason is really simple and has to do with the necessary ability of a leader to react to new environments or conditions.

A rational person, something really diffcult to establish, should always change its mind if the appearing opportunity could lead to a greater benefit. And this could be easily associated with Machiavelli's principle about the end justify the means (not all, by the way).

Therefore, the difficult aim is to set shared values to stick to, while the rest and less important things could be more or less easily adapted, while deciding and prioritising. This is probably one differentiating skills amongst poor leader and politicians compared with the succesful ones.

And what a great example we had in Chile these days. Our President visited Cuba, with the most famous socialist-comunist dictatorship of this era, with several issues including poverty, human rights, censorship, etc. But the coalition in our Government is supposed to be against all of that, and despite that our President met the former dictator Castro, who in turn wrote a series of opinion agains the Chilean interests and avoiding to address any criticism on the Cuban regime.

After this, there is no doubt that our President and the people who is leading Chile will not have the same position to discuss on the mentioned issues, and also lose credibility at an unprecedent level. And all because of the lack of consistency in the only important thing that reunited in the past such a diverse group of political parties to begin a new government.

Después de un descanso en el blog, que incluyó vacaciones y otro grado académico, entre muchas otras cosas, he vuelto a escribir. Esta vez, sobre un tópico que siempre me ha interesado: la consecuencia.


En realidad, debería decir inconsecuencia. Aunque normalmente se le considera un defecto, se trata de una habilidad extremadamente necesaria para dirigir o hacer política. Y la razón es muy simple, pues esto tiene que ver con la capacidad de un líder de hacer lo que sea necesario en nuevos contextos o variaciones del entorno.

Una persona racional (sin discutir mucho al respecto), debería siempre modificar sus decisiones cuando las condiciones muestran que el beneficio a obtener es superior a lo antiguamente estimado. Y esto, puede ser a su vez asociado con el famoso "fin justifica los medios" de Maquiavelo (¡no todos!).

Luego, el problema que como desarrollar una visión o valores comunes a un grupo, para poder ceñirse a ellos y, así, adaptarse más o menos fácilmente al cambio en todo lo demás, decidiendo y priorizando. Esta debe ser una de las grandes diferencias entre un político o líder mediocre y los que realmente son exitosos.

A propósito, que excelente ejemplo tenemos en Chile estos días. Nuestra Presidente visitó Cuba, la más famosa dictadura socialista-comunista de nuestro tiempo, lo cual incluye problema como la extrema pobreza, derechos humanos, censura, entre muchos otros. Y pese a que la Concertanción, la coalición en el gobierno, está en contra de todo esto por principio, nuestra Presidente ser reunió con el antiguo dictador Fidel Castro, quien a su vez emitió opiniones en contra de los intereses chilenos y sin darse por aludido de ninguna manera respecto de las críticas al regimen.

Después de esto, no hay ninguna duda que nuestra Presidente y líderes ya no estarán en la misma posición para discutir temas donde eran un referente moral exlcusivo, además perderán credibilidad a un nivel sin precedentes, por no mantener la consecuencia en lo único que une al heterogéneo grupo de partidos que gobierna Chile.
