When we talk about inflation in a country, the concept is a weighted average of the increase on prices. Details of the measure could be found on statistical institutions for each country.

In Chile, inflation is reaching the 10% level, far from the 3% target and will be not anchored at that level this year nor the next one.

The consequences in macroeconomics terms are widely discussed, but in simple social terms we shall be clear: high inflation means more poverty and higher inequalities. Poor people will be the most affected and medium class in the country, which receives no government aids, will be even more struck by this phenomena. In the effort to control inflation a monetary tightening is expected with the consequence of less credit available for people and a direct effect on consumption, making more difficult the creation of jobs.

Let's be clear: inflation is bad and alternatives to those proposed to control this price shock are worst (as you can see in other countries in the region).

El concepto de inflación es un promedio para medir el alza de precios en un país. Como se mide, depende de las instituciones que realizan las encuestas.

En Chile, la inflación alcanzó el nivel de 10%, lejos de la meta de 3% del Banco Central y no se espera que éste ni el próximo año se recupere ese nivel.

Las consecuencias macroeconómicas son ampliamente discutidas, pero con las consecuencias sociales debemos ser claros: alta inflación significa más pobreza y mayores desigualdades. La gente pobre será muy afectada, pero la clase media que no recibe ayudas gubernamentales será aún más afectada. Los esfuerzos para controlar la inflación conducirán a políticas monetarias más restrictivas, lo que implica más dificultades para conseguir créditos con un efecto directo en el consumo y el comercio, por lo que se puede esperar mayores dificultades para encontrar empleos.

Seamos claros: la inflación hace mal y otras alternativas para controlar los altos precios son aún peores (y para eso contamos con los ejemplos de países vecinos).
