Is there a nuclear disaster yet? ¿Hay un desastre nuclear por ahí?

Funny this plenty-of-information days may found us pretty misguided on the news.

Sadly, Japan lived its worst registered earthquake, followed by a destructive tsunami (tidal waves). Thousands were affected and still are homeless, some less lucky are missing or dead.

However, most attention is now centered on the evolution of the nuclear crisis at the Fushima No. 1 power complex. And having so many "sources" of information is proving to provoque many difficulties to find reliable information on the matter.

My suggestions at the time are:

1. Get local news like Kyodo or JapanTimes, or at least avoid the lag of news caused by international media or social media like Twitter.

2. Follow live blogs, a new trend in media, where updates on the story are posted many times every hour, like these in AlJazeera or in BBC. Don't forget to refresh them or set the current day.

3. Be informed from the source of nuclear news directly from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Our prayers with all those who are in Japan.

Back to blogging!

There it is! I'm back after a long recess. And not only in the blog, I'm back in Chile.

And to break the silence my statement is keep this space dedicated to discuss what I believe are the important things. This year, not only environmental issues arose, the economic crisis had a deep impact in the society. And all of those things will probably concentrate much of the attention during the presidential election over this year.

Topics I plan to cover are the weakening of democracy in Chile, the rise of populism and its deep impact over the environment and employment, the lack of an energy and power national strategy, and growing conflict among values, freedom and rights.

Believe it or not, there is a Pirate Party in Sweden aspiring to reform copyright laws, abolish patents, and protect citizens' privacy. Simple. And after the Pirate Bay trial, they doubled their membership.

And remarkable how youngsters are gathering in these new forms of political parties to increase their participation on state decision-making processes. It is useful to take a look on how pressure groups are changing, from general political parties, i.e. Labour Party, to more targeted groups, i.e. the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (Logan 2008, CR in a Global Age).

The article from the Guardian.
